New York Metropolis Mayor Eric Adams and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have stated a swimming pool that floats in and filters town’s waters might be examined within the East River at Pier 35 on Manhattan’s Decrease East Facet.
The town and state will collectively fund a water filtration pilot for the so-called “+ Pool” there throughout August.
“New York Metropolis’s waterways are a few of our most vital belongings. By exploring the potential of a + Pool, we’re … increasing equitable entry to swimming for all New Yorkers, particularly our kids,” stated Mayor Adams.
The concept of + Pool was first mooted in 2021.
In January 2024, Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul stated town and state would collectively fund the primary spherical of demonstration initiatives to check the idea.
New York State will contribute $12m to testing the venture, with town chipping in $4m.
For the 2021 idea, Arup labored on + Pool’s construction, mechanics and filtration methods, One Nature acted because the ecological guide, and McLaren Engineering was the marine engineer.
