Lithuania this week began constructing a 170-hectare navy base to deal with some 4,000 combat-ready German troops about 20km from the border with Belarus, Russia’s shut ally.
The transfer is available in response to Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine. It will likely be the primary time German troops are stationed exterior Germany since WWII.
Lithuania’s defence ministry known as it “the biggest piece of navy infrastructure within the historical past of Lithuania”.
It will likely be positioned within the Rūdninkai Coaching Space south of the capital Vilnius.
Lithuanian contractor Eikos Statyba UAB signed a €125m contract to construct the preliminary section in early August, the ministry mentioned.
The bottom shall be able to host the German brigade in late 2027, Deutsche Welle (DW) reported.
“If we’re not safe, there is no such thing as a safety for [Germany],” mentioned Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrid Simonyte at Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony, DW reported.
Common Raimundas Vaiksnoras, Lithuania’s chief of protection, mentioned Lithuania would spend some €1bn on the bottom earlier than its completion.
He known as the venture “an enormous funding”, including, “the brigade will work as reassurance to our inhabitants and as deterrence, to push the Russians out,” reviews DW.
