Lithuania this week began constructing a 170-hectare navy base to deal with some 4,000 combat-ready German troops about 20km from the border with Belarus, Russia’s shut ally.
The transfer is available in response to Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine. It will likely be the primary time German troops are stationed exterior Germany since WWII.
