The architect says the centre is meant to be “a mysterious quantity that appears to be floating”.
It’s the centrepiece for the “Inexperienced Ark” venture, launched to renovate 22 at-risk greenhouses, every with a definite microclimate.
Collectively, they protect greater than 23,000 species, making up about 6% of the world’s flora.
The gardens have been established in 1797 in Brussels as a conservatory for uncommon crops. In 1938, they relocated to a 92ha web site within the grounds of Bouchout Fortress in Meise.
Over time, the greenhouses degenerated, with many requiring security nets to catch falling panes of glass.
