Sweco has received a €4.2m contract to design and handle development of a protein manufacturing unit in Finland for biotech start-up Enifer.
The plant will make “mycoprotein”, a fungus-based protein used as an alternative choice to meat.
It’s derived from the mycelium, or root community, of fungi grown in fermentation tanks.
The mycelium takes root in liquified by-products from meals, farming and forest industries.
Enifer mentioned it had secured €33m to construct the plant, its first, in an current industrial constructing within the village of Kantvik in Finland’s Uusimaa area.
It expects the plant to supply 3 million kilos of mycoprotein a 12 months, sufficient for the annual protein necessities of 40,000 individuals.
Manufacturing is scheduled to begin in 2026.
Sweco mentioned the plant would be the world’s first to make use of by-products from meals manufacturing on a business scale.
