Work has begun on the primary part of a broad-gauge, 107km-long canal for super-barges in France that’s supposed to considerably enhance freight flows between France, Belgium and the Netherlands, World Cargo Information reviews.
Work pertains to the primary, 89km stretch of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal (“CSNE” in French) after three native authorities granted environmental approval: the prefectures of the Oise, the Somme, the Pas-de-Calais and the Nord.
Deliberate since 2003, CSNE shall be a high-capacity waterway connecting Compiègne on the RIver Oise to Aubencheul-au-Bac on the Canal de la Sensée, and to different European waterways.
1 barge = 400 vehicles
When full in 2030, it’s going to carry barges as much as 185m lengthy and 11m extensive which are in a position to carry the equal of 400 trucks-worth of cargo, probably sparking a localised modal shift from roads again to canals.
With a breadth of 54m, it’s wider than France’s congested Canal du Nord and so is meant to extend cargo flows whereas slicing highway congestion and air pollution.
